course of family history moves to Ulster for a century of growth and tempering and flows on to America for its full development into a progressive people of courage, honor and an approach to greatness.

Naturally there are many side angles and crosscurrents to this broad outline of the Houston story. By no means all followed this general course. Many remained in the native Scotland to take their role in political, industrial and cultural development. Other thousands took root permanently in Ulster to share in the building of the British dominion of Northern Ireland. Some settled in various countries of the British Commonwealth such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. But the main body continued westward to America where the Houston population in modern times far outnumbers that of the family name in Scotland, Northern Ireland and all the other countries of the world combined.

(Note: The reader is reminded that the spelling "Houston," as used throughout this book is a general name and includes Huston, Houstoun and other variations as well as Houston.)
