mate, based on telephone listings and percentage projection, is a figure of 30,000.
Telephone listings also are a key to the distribution over the nation and in other parts of the world. Virtually every city and town of any size in the U. S. has Houstons listed in ‘phone directories. Generally, areas predominantly Protestant have greater percentages than those largely populated by other faiths. A sampling of telephone directories gives interesting figures:

At the time of this survey, there was one Houston listed each in Paris and Vienna. There were none in the telephone directories of such European cities as Lisbon, Geneva, Zurich, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Niece, Lyon and Cannes, and none in French-speaking Quebec, Canada.
It is evident from the foregoing figures that most all of the Houstons live in the English-speaking areas of the world and that, in the United States, they are well spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Horace Greely’s advice, "Go west, young man," seems to have been well heeded by the Houstons. They are more numerous today in the westward states than in the localities where they first settled. It is also apparent that the main stream of the family migration was from Scotland to Northern Ireland, to America and westward. Of course, many carried on in the older homelands. It is known that the Houston population of Northern Ireland in 1890 was 3,046, largely in the counties of Antrim, Londonderry, Armagh and Down.
