In ancient Scotland, people were named for places—thus the Houstons took their name from the town and parish where they lived. In America, the custom was reversed and towns and counties were named for persons. One-third of the 50 states in the U. S. have towns or counties named for Houstons. In general, the present-day Houstons are a people of energy, ability, patriotism, wholesome character and notable achievements. Like their fathers before them, the modern Houstons are making worthy contributions to the life of America and the other nations in which they have found opportunity for growth and service and for the fashioning of a good life. One may safely predict that they shall be a force for progress and free.dom and the making of a better world in the centuries to come.

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.
